Ringwood Little Athletics Centre is a community-based sporting organisation which has been in operation for over 50 years. Having humble beginnings starting back in October 1969, when the Ringwood Lions Club had the foresight to introduce an athletic competition for the local Ringwood Community.
With the inaugural competition held at Ringwood East’s No.1 Oval, there were ten clubs which represented our local schools. These clubs were, East Ringwood, Eastwood, Greenwood, Southwood, Norwood, OLS (Our Lady’s). Heathmont, Ringwood Heights, Mullum, & Yarra Valley.
Much has changed in the proceeding 50 years going from un-laned grass tracks and hand-held manual timers to our current rubberised all weather track and electronic timing gates. The Centre has also moved a few times, in 1970 competition moved from Ringwood East to Mullum oval, and to start the 1975/76 season competition moved to our current occupation at Proclamation Park, Ringwood.
Today, Ringwood Little Athletics Centre boasts one of the premier venues in Victoria for athletic competition. With track and facility up-grades undertaken in 2016/17 and continuous maintenance provided by Maroondah City Council, Ringwood Little Athletics provides a state-of-the-art facility for all its athletes to enjoy and compete at their highest level.
Competition is open to age groups from under U6 to under U17 and we also provide the opportunity to progress into senior athletic competition through development paths with Ringwood Senior Athletics and Ringwood Professional Athletics clubs. These development paths also allow athletes to seek further development of specific events with access to highly qualified and skilled coaches across all athletic disciplines from sprinting and hurdles, middle distance, throws and jumps. Hi everyone, thank you for joining Ringwood Little Athletics Centre (RLAC) for the 2023-2024 Summer Track and Field and Cross country season. The committee and I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all and trust you and your athletes will enjoy your experience at Ringwood.
What a great season to be part of athletics with the Budapest World Athletics Championships recently concluding and showcasing athletics talents from all over the world. These events remind us how important it is to nurture and grow young athletes, by harnessing grass roots athletics. Now we look forward to the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and Brisbane in 2032. Imagine that right now there are aspiring Aussie athletes among our Little Athletes at Ringwood with a chance to compete in their home country. That would be truly amazing.
During the winter period, the committee have kept up the momentum to ensure our track and field facilities are in a great state and our equipment is updated. We recently had our jump pits filled, refreshed old equipment and ensured that council maintain our grouds and the facility. Ringwood hosted two cross country events, again with effective planning and effort by our committee and volunteers. Both were very successful events with lots of athletes attending from a number of other Eastern 7 clubs.
As we enter another year of little athletics, let’s make the most of the season by working together to create a great season for our athletes and all of us. For the parents of athletes, including my committee, I thank you for volunteering your time to keep our season running smoothly and to be a part of this exciting time for your Little Athletes. I believe Athletics has a lot to offer our children, with its diverse events, encouraging environment, a great social atmosphere and community spirit. I look forward to meeting all of you and your athletes at our wonderful track and pavilion at Ringwood and I hope that you enjoy your time at Ringwood Little Athletics Centre.
